THE SUEVOS

 THE SUEVOS

The Suevos were a set of German-born peoples. They were established in the territory currently occupied by Germany and the Czech Republic. They were a heterogeneous group formed in addition to Suevos by Marcomans, Quads, Alamanians, Bavarians and Lombards. Some of these stayed and others along with the vandals and Alans crossed the Rhine in the 406. After attacking the Gauls, guests passed to Spain to be used as military forces. Once there the territory was distributed and the Suevos settled in Gallaecia. This province covered the present Galician provinces, Leon, Zamora, Asturias and the north of Portugal. The Suevos formed the first medieval kingdom of the West. However, their small number prevented them from having great control over the territory. After years of rivalries with the Visigoths their kingdom was conquered by the Visigoths king Leovigildo in 585.
