Iceberg in Antarctica

Iceberg in Antarctica. Antarctica is a critical powerhouse in maintaining the planet’s climate stability. It contains approximately 70 percent of Earth’s fresh water and about 90 percent of its freshwater ice. Since 1992, the continent has lost an estimated 2.7 trillion tons of ice, contributing to a global sea level rise of more than 7.5 millimeters. In March 2000, a massive iceberg measuring roughly 280 kilometers long and 40 kilometers wide broke away from the Ross Ice Shelf. This was the largest ice shelf calving event ever recorded and its area was comparable to the size of Connecticut.
