On 7 December 1988 — exactly 37 years ago, South Africa moved Nelson Mandela from the Constantiaberg clinic to a house at Victor Verster Prison. Mandela was recovering from tuberculosis, and the transfer offered him more freedom than he had experienced in decades behind bars. It was a major signal that the apartheid government was preparing for political change. Just over a year later, Mandela would walk free and begin leading South Africa toward democracy. His move to Victor Verster remains one of the key steps toward the end of apartheid and the rise of a new nation.
