Nostalgia (1983) - Andrei Tarkovsky

Nostalgia (1983), directed by Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, is a poetic and meditative drama exploring themes of memory, displacement, and spiritual longing. It was Tarkovsky's first film made outside the Soviet Union, set in Italy, and reflects his own feelings of exile and homesickness.

The story follows Andrei Gorchakov (played by Oleg Yankovsky), a Russian poet traveling through Italy to research the life of an 18th-century Russian composer. He is accompanied by his Italian guide and translator, Eugenia (Domiziana Giordano), but remains emotionally detached from her and the surroundings. Andrei is haunted by memories of his family and homeland, which he sees in dreamlike visions filled with fog, decay, and beauty.
In Italy, he meets Domenico (Erland Josephson), a reclusive man considered mad by the locals. Domenico once locked his family inside their home for years, believing the world was doomed and needed saving. Despite his eccentricity, Andrei finds a spiritual kinship with him. Domenico urges Andrei to perform a symbolic act—carrying a lit candle across a mineral pool without letting it go out—as a gesture of faith and redemption.
The film unfolds slowly and visually, rich with long takes, symbolic imagery, and a haunting atmosphere. Tarkovsky uses water, ruins, and natural sounds to evoke a sense of timelessness and inner struggle. The narrative is less about plot and more about emotional and philosophical exploration.
Nostalgia is ultimately a film about exile—not just from a country, but from meaning, connection, and faith. Andrei’s inner conflict mirrors Tarkovsky’s own feelings as an artist torn between cultures. The film ends with a powerful image blending the Russian countryside and an Italian ruin, symbolizing the merging of memory and present, homeland and foreign land.
Profound and melancholic, Nostalgia is a deeply personal and spiritual cinematic experience.
