Pedra nos rins, que dor!

Kidney stones are one of the most painful human conditions — but a groundbreaking new therapy may soon eliminate them from within. Researchers from the University of California, San Diego have genetically engineered a strain of gut bacteria that can detect and dissolve oxalate crystals, the main ingredient in most kidney stones.

When introduced into the intestines, the bacteria colonize naturally and begin producing enzymes that break down oxalate before it reaches the kidneys. In early animal trials, the treatment reduced stone formation by over 90%, without side effects or the need for invasive surgery.
If approved for humans, this probiotic therapy could replace painful procedures and lifelong medication. Beyond kidney stones, scientists are exploring similar methods to tackle uric acid buildup, cholesterol regulation, and even insulin resistance using engineered microbes.
The era of medicine where we heal ourselves — from the inside out — has truly begun.
