"Japan is using autonomous underwater drones to map the ocean floor faster than any human-led mission could manage. These drones, shaped like small torpedoes, work together in swarms. They use sonar, LIDAR, and cameras to scan huge areas with high accuracy. Recently, off the coast of Okinawa, they mapped 250 square kilometers of seafloor in less than three days. This technology is helping scientists discover shipwrecks, track coral reef health, and study earthquake zones.
Unlike traditional missions that need large ships and human divers, these drones operate continuously and dive as deep as 6,000 meters. Japan’s JAMSTEC (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology) is even developing models that can reach 8,000 meters.
