Dr. Christiaan Barnard

On this day, 3 December 1967 — exactly 58 years ago in South Africa — Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the world’s first human‑to‑human heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. He led a brave nine‑hour operation, transplanting a heart from a brain‑dead donor into Louis Washkansky, who was battling end‑stage heart disease. Although Mr. Washkansky survived only 18 days (he died of pneumonia, weakened by anti‑rejection treatment) the achievement opened the door to modern heart transplantation.

Today, we remember this milestone in medical history — when courage, teamwork and innovation combined to change what was thought possible.
