Sweden is making history by constructing the world’s first fossil-free steel plant, aiming to replace coal with green hydrogen in the steelmaking process. Traditional steel production is one of the largest industrial sources of CO₂ emissions, responsible for nearly 8% of global emissions.
By using hydrogen instead of coal, the process emits only water vapor rather than carbon dioxide. This breakthrough could reduce millions of tons of CO₂ each year while maintaining the same quality of steel.
The project, part of Sweden’s HYBRIT initiative, has already begun pilot production and is supported by some of the largest energy and mining companies in Europe.
